Daniela Nardi's Espresso Manifesto - Staying True to Her Heritage
February 2 2012
It’s ironic that Daniela Nardi sips a cappuccino in a Toronto café, as the self-proclaimed electro/acoustic pop artist promotes herself under the whimsical moniker of ‘Espresso Manifesto’. “The attention that’s put into making and producing the perfect espresso and making a record is quite similar,” says the anti-diva, associating espresso with Italy in an all-encompassing name that embodies her band, her voice and the production of her music as a cultural movement

DN's Espresso Manifesto to attend APAP Conference in NYC

On Sun Jan 8, 9:25pm, enjoy the world-jazz flavours of Daniela Nardi’s stunning new project, Espresso Manifesto, a riveting, live tribute to the legendary Paolo Conte.

Daniela and her husband, celebrated jazz pianist Ron Davis spent the Fall in Italy, recording with some of the country’s A-list jazz musicians, including Fabrizio Bosso, Gabriele Mirabassi, Dario Rosciglione, just to name a few. They arranged the works of Conte, whose stature is comparable to Jacques Brel or Tom Waits.

What makes this project special is, firstly, no woman has ever recorded a full album of his work. But probably most importantly, the live Espresso Manifesto project and the accompanying new CD (Via Via, The Songs of Paolo Conte – to be released this Spring!) are extraordinary examples of what has become of the Italian Diaspora.

"I was looking to personally bridge a gap between being Italian and Canadian”, Nardi says of her transition into singing Italian and choosing the material of Paolo Conte. "I was inspired by the Boom era in Italy – the 60’s. I was drawn to the Italy whose Jazz tradition was censored by Mussolini in WW2, yet survived clandestinely, to only explode in the 50’s and 60’s. To me, Paolo Conte is the culmination of all these elements."

While many tend to think that Italian music is just “O Solo Mio” and Opera, Espresso Manifesto does not indulge in what Daniela calls “Pepperoni Parade” clichés. The Espresso Manifesto/Via Via project is on a mission to bring to audiences the cool Italian Songbook in a modern, jazz setting.

Another special little note, on January 6th, Conte turns 75! How fitting that this new year kicks things off with such a tribute!

Joining Daniela on stage are husband Ron Davis on piano, Sasha Boychuk (clarinet), Brandi Disterheft (bass), Allison Miller (drums), and Justin Walter (trumpet).
